Fairbanks: Arctic Circle Adventure - Full-Day Guided Tour

4.5 (82 verified reviews)

About This Experience

This is the summer, daylight version of 1st Alaska Tours' Arctic Circle trip, offered from May 15 to August 20 at $260 per person. A van collects you from your Fairbanks hotel between 7:00 and 8:00 AM and heads north onto the Dalton Highway, the 414-mile haul road from Livengood to Deadhorse. The Arctic Circle sign is about 198 road miles from town, and the whole day covers roughly 400 miles.

The first stop is a Trans-Alaska Pipeline viewing area, where the guide covers the engineering behind the 800-mile line. The road then crosses the Yukon River on the bridge at milepost 56 and climbs to Finger Mountain around milepost 98, where there is a short hike across the high plateau above the tree line with wide views over the tundra. At the Arctic Circle Wayside, milepost 115, you photograph the sign that marks latitude 66 degrees 33 minutes north and receive your Cross-the-Circle certificate.

On the return the van pulls off again at the Yukon River so you can walk right down to the bank, and there is a dinner stop at a restaurant before the final run back to Fairbanks. Meals are not included, so bring snacks for the morning and money for dinner. Drop-off at your hotel is around 10:00 PM. In 82 GetYourGuide reviews (4.5 average) guests single out the driver guides, Daniel, Paul, Sasha and Elijah among them, and most mention the same trade-off: a bumpy road, but worth it to say you have stood at the Arctic Circle.

Pickup is from Fairbanks hotels only, not Airbnbs or private residences, children under 5 are not permitted, and the operator needs at least four guests to run the tour. Because the trip is in summer, the sky never gets dark enough for the aurora; if seeing the northern lights matters to you, the operator's winter Arctic Circle Northern Lights trip is the one to book instead.

What Travelers Say

Rated 4.5/5 by 82 verified GetYourGuide travelers.

We had a great experience visiting the arctic circle and enjoying the beautiful Alaskan wilderness. The drive was long and bumpy, but still enjoyable because of our very friendly driver Daniel, who had great stories of his previous trips to tell and could tell us lots about the landscape, pipeline and wilderness. We appreciated his guidance a lot and would definitely come back to appreciate the Northern Lights during the winter season. Thanks a lot Yvonne and family!
