About This Experience

This is the winter version of 1st Alaska Tours' Arctic Circle day trip, built so that the drive north happens in daylight and the drive back happens under a dark sky. A van collects you from your Fairbanks hotel between noon and 1:00 PM and leaves town at 1:00 PM. From there it is about 198 road miles to the Arctic Circle sign on the Dalton Highway, the 414-mile haul road that runs from Livengood to Deadhorse, and the operator budgets about six hours for the northbound leg including stops.

The first stop is a Trans-Alaska Pipeline viewing area, where the guide explains the engineering behind the 800-mile line. The road then crosses the Yukon River on the bridge at milepost 56, and later climbs onto the high, treeless plateau at Finger Mountain around milepost 98. This is where the sandwich pack comes out: ham or vegetarian sandwiches, chips, granola bars, sweets, bottled water and hot drinks, with the guide pointing out moose, fox and the occasional lynx. The sign at the Arctic Circle Wayside, milepost 115, marks latitude 66 degrees 33 minutes north; you take your photos there and receive the Cross-the-Circle certificate.

As darkness settles, the van turns south and the aurora watch begins. The guide stops at higher ground along the way whenever the sky looks promising, and the tour also hands out an aurora certificate. Guests in the 172 GetYourGuide reviews (4.5 average) repeatedly credit the driver guides, Paul, Daniel and Tanner among them, for keeping a very long day interesting. The honest caveats also come from those reviews: the road is rough, the aurora did not show for everyone, and a few winter guests found the van cold at their feet.

Pickup is limited to hotels in town in Fairbanks, not Airbnbs or private residences, children under 5 are not permitted, and the tour needs at least four guests to run. The listed price is $330 per person. You are back at your hotel around 3:00 AM, so book this for a night when you have nothing early the next morning.

What Travelers Say

Rated 4.5/5 by 172 verified GetYourGuide travelers.

with a super guide like Daniel, the trip was memorable. He entertained the group by providing lots of stories about his experiences that void the long hours and drive to the arctic. you could tell how anxious he is to make this trip worth the money we all paid for. Definitely 5 star. Thanks Daniel.

Daniel was our guide and he made sure we were all informed every mile of the way. He is very passionate about that stretch of highway. We enjoyed everything about the trip. Totally recommend anyone who wants to check going to the arctic circle of the bucket list to book a trip with them.

We had an incredible experience on the Arctic Circle tour with 1st Alaska Tours! Our guide, Paul, was hands down the best guide ever. His passion for Alaska and the Northern Lights is infectious, and his deep knowledge of history and the local landscape made the 13+ hour journey fly by. It was amazing to watch the scenery shift from forest to tundra. We were even lucky enough to see the northern lights dance with streaks of pink! Paul knew all the best stops and shared so many great stories. Highly recommend!

Frequently Asked Questions

What time does the tour leave and when do I get back?

Hotel pickup is between 12 and 1pm, the van leaves Fairbanks at 1:00 PM, and you are dropped back at your hotel around 3:00 AM. Allow a full 14 hours.

Will I see the northern lights?

Not necessarily. The aurora depends on solar activity and clear skies, and the operator states there is no refund if it does not appear. The return drive is timed for the dark hours, which gives you a reasonable window, and guests who did see it describe stops on high ground along the Dalton Highway.

Is food included?

Yes. The tour includes ham sandwiches (vegetarian on request only, so tell the operator in advance), chips, granola bars, sweets, bottled water and hot drinks. Anything beyond that is at your own cost.

Can I be picked up from my Airbnb?

No. Pickup and drop-off are from hotels in town in Fairbanks only. Airbnbs and private residences are excluded, so if you are staying in one, arrange to meet at a participating hotel.

What is the minimum age and group size?

Children under 5 are not permitted. The operator needs a minimum of 4 guests for the tour to run; if that is not met you are offered a refund or another date. Its own listing caps a van at 14 guests.

How rough is the road?

Most of the Dalton Highway is gravel, and reviewers describe the ride as long and bumpy. The driving alone is around 400 miles round trip, so the tour is better suited to people who are comfortable sitting for long stretches.
